How to Provide Access for Care Workers

Access for Care Workers

This situation occurs when care workers need frequent access to a building and the person they are visiting is unable to let them in.

This is a common question with several possible solutions. You may be able to provide a key or prox fob that can be passed between users needing access. There may be an option to setup a code on the door entry system (avoiding the need to provide multiple keys or fobs) or perhaps install a keypad linked to the door entry system itself.

Another options is to provide a key safe like this Police Approved “secure by Design” option:

secure by design

This can be installed in a convienient location near the entrance door and the code provided to anyone who needs access. The main benefit of using a key safe is that only one key needs to be provided and the only information required to gain access s the code (users dont need to carry additional keys or fobs).

The same unit can be fitted at the flat door and set up with the same code or a different one if preferred.

More modern solutions include biometric detectors or bluetooth enables locks however users need to be registered to gain access, so these solutions dont fit quite as well for this particular problem.

If a higher security optoin is preferred or the building where access is required is listed and a safe box cannot be fitted, a GSM enabled system can be used.

gsm enabled system

The GSM system uses a low cost SIM card to control access to the property. The device is installed inside the property so there is no visible equipment fitted externally, which has the added benefit of increased security and is unable to be vandalised by passers by.

The basic operation required the user to simply call the SIM card phone number. If the number is recognised, the device drops the call and allows access (there has to be a door entry system in place for this system to work).

Typical systems can store up to 2000 numbers and there are many restrictions that can be applied: single use only, specific hours only, specified days only etc. Systems are also capable of recording up to the last 1000 events.

Additional users can be added (or users blocked) by sending a text message instruction to the unit (it is not necessary to visit the premises to make such changes).

The same device can be used to open gates, activate lights etc.
